YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE

apologies again. you are stuck with another pirated-looking video with our commentary, because CLEARLY the internet and, specifiaclly, youtube don't understand the sheer perfection that this scene from penelope is - ultimately a shame for our society, because this scene is perfect.

we are not trying to be overdramatic gen-zers when we state that this is truly an underrated cinematic moment. but if you think we are being overdramatic gen-zers, let's at least explain why....

ALL THE REASONS WHY THIS SCENE IS PERFECT

1) THE SUSPENSE KILLS!!

is it maybe a tad predictable since we're staying on just this one shot - maybe, but the lead up to this sweeps you off your feet into the fairytale of it all, and it's just wonderful. so even if it's predictable, it's still precious in our eyes.

2) LIKE OF COURSE HE PLAYS PIANO

he's emotive. he's sensitive. he's tender. he's a sweetie. he's johnny, and he's the love interest!! like there's no scientific research out there that says piano players are the heartthrobs, but, just like there's no scientific research out there that says british boys aren't heartthrobs either, you kinda just have to understand science is real, but just because it hasn't been proven YET doesn't mean hot isn't hot. and ESPECIALLY in the early 2000s!! it's like, if you weren't a guitar guy in a band (because c'mon there were no archie andrews 'i like playing the guitar from time to time' - they were ALWAYS in bands back then - especially in their garages) you were def an *fbi*(tm). BUT if you were a piano player - shut it - you are our golden gem!! except if you're brandon mf foster.

3) THE LINGER

the lingering tutorial of how to play the notes. the lingering hand touch. the lingering get up after smacking the bookcase. the lingering stare - not just yeet out of the room, because someone finally realizes that her nose is not hideous. (like for real guys, it's not that much of a pig nose. it looks fine.) the miscommunication between the touch of the nose and the camera-flash-pull-back. the "i'm a monster" and "no wait, penelope" moment. everything was executed perfectly and drenched in suspense, tenderness, and romantic intensity. it's just so AGH!!

4) AND THE SONG

like think if he was playing "smack that" by akon (which was popular in 2006). it would've been very different. the decision to play/sing "you are my sunshine" just encapsulated their relationship before it even really blossomed. like even if they aren't in each other's lives, they still are thinking about them, following them, haunting them, looming over them like the sun in the sky - unescapable and a passion burning bright.

END OF ANALYSIS

most of all, we find this scene absolutely perfect, because you have to have this moment to make the very end at the halloween party so romantic - the longing pull in for a kiss, "it was you all along". this scene is just pure MAGIC, whether you see that or not. it's perfect!!
